Karl has a brother, Mark, who is about 10 years older than him, and could be described as a bit of a tearaway. He could also be described as bearing a remarkable resemblance to that lizard man in Babylon 5 but this would be cruel and inaccurate. Mark's most notable story is from when Mark was kicked out of the army for driving a tank down the high street to get a packet of fags. Karl regularly refers to him as "our kid".

Karl's brother's problems in the army worsened when he was discovered to be having an affair with his commanding officer's missus.

Karl's brother got out of fighting in the war in the Falklands because his mother called his commanding officer and explained he had only recently joined.
