After Paul Shane backed out of When The Whistle Blows because it was "too broad," he was replaced with Chegwin. His character made bigoted remarks about black people and homosexuals and was inept at acting. The role was originally offered to ventriloquist, Keith Harris, but he declined because he felt the script was racist. In an article from the Liverpool Echo, Chegwin commented on the controversy by saying, "The people who didn't get it probably think Johnny Depp really is a pirate."

Quotes

  • Kimberley: Why are you late?
Keith Chegwin: Because my sister buried me today.
Andy: Oh for fuck’s sake! Why would your sister bury you?! That would be mental.
Keith Chegwin: Well, sorry I got so confused. The thing is my sister’s not dead.
  • Chegwin: 14 years at the BBC. Swap Shop. Cheggers Plays Pop. Still run by Jews and Queers, is it?
Andy: Jews and Quee-?! I think there are a few Jewish people, and some gay people yeah.
Chegwin: (sarcastically) "Gay!" I forgot, not allowed to say queer nowadays, are you? Suggests something abnormal. What could be more normal than shoving your cock up a bloke's arse? Let's face it; If God had wanted a cock up an arse, he wouldn't have given us minges. Men have knobs. Women have fannies. Pop knob in fanny. Not up the arse.
Andy: Should really be taking notes.
    Chegwin: What?
Andy: Nothing. Its all good advice.
