The Holy Trinity is a shorthand way of referring to Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington, and was a term first coined by Merchant on the show dated 26 July 2003 when he referred to them as "the holy trinity." The title became common phrasing used on the Forum, where it was lengthened to "Holy Trinity of Comedy," and therefore abbreviated "HTC".

Since mid-2007, the acronym has largely been abandoned because it was confusing and not readily understandable to new members.
