The Sun is a tabloid daily newspaper published in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland with the highest circulation of any daily English-language newspaper in the world, standing at 3,107,412 copies daily in the first half of 2006.

Stephen Merchant occasionally used the questions posed in the "White Van Man" feature in The Sun (where they asked a regular white van driver about current affairs) on Karl, in the feature White Van Karl.

In an incident that caused much outrage on the Pilkipedia forum, an article on The Sun's website heavily criticized Steve's stand up routine simply referring to him as a "lanky-not-so-funny-man" and claiming that "Just like Ricky Gervais, he seems to have let his success with The Office and Extras go to his head." The article's writer also cited an incident in which Steve picked on an audience member by saying his wife would be better off with someone with BAFTAs and calling him useless to which the man replied he was a barrister followed by an awkward silence. Many fans believed that the article's writer simply didn't understand both Steve and Ricky's brand of comedy and that it's usually heavily steeped in irony and that the faux-arrogance they sometimes exhibit is in fact a deliberately OTT shtick that has over the years become a trademark of theirs. Also the credibility of The Sun and all tabloids was brought into question.
