Appraisals is the third episode of the second series of The Office.

Plot

There’s a birthday party in the office for one of the women from the Swindon branch. One of her gifts was a pink plastic dildo that Tim hid in David Brent’s office after Rachel dared him. Tim takes the Swindon lot for a tour of the warehouse where Lee embarrasses Dawn. Two consultants offer Brent a position as an expert speaker for corporate training seminars. They also offered a job to Neil but he turned them down. Tim and Rachel continue to do practical jokes with Gareth and Dawn gets a bit jealous. Chris Finch shows up for the party and winds up having sex with the birthday girl in the parking lot.

Cultural References

• David Brent mentions Ian Botham, or “Beefy,” as one of his influences. Botham is a former professional cricket player. He also references some controversies about him, including assault charges and his suspension for smoking marijuana. He also mentions Botham’s charity walk from John O’ Groats to Land’s End.
• Brent mentions Alton Towers, a theme park and resort in Staffordshire, England, as his biggest disappointment.
• Brent’s three choices of people to have a working lunch with are Martin Luther King, the civil rights leader, the Dalai Lama, and Rory Bremner, a Scottish comedian who specializes in impressions.
