Ricky Gervais
Gervais kicked off the show with a brief monologue where he poked fun at Steve Carell for stealing his ideas. Carell reacted by miming and saying the words "I'll kill you." Gervais went on to criticize the US version of The Office by saying, "…if you think that particular version has jumped the shark a little bit. That's what some of the forums are saying," followed by a plug for the UK version of The Office. He also made jokes about plastic surgery and his penis as well as jokes aimed at Hugh Laurie, Kiefer Sutherland, Angelina Jolie, and NBC.
Gervais appeared several times throughout the ceremony to introduce presenters. Some of the most notable moments came when Gervais went after Paul McCartney about saving money, hinting at his recent costly divorce to Heather Mills, and Mel Gibson for enjoying alcohol. Gibson was convicted of driving under the influence in 2006. Both McCartney and Gibson took the jokes well. Immediately after the joke, Gibson pretended to slur his words and Gervais indicated on his blog the next day that McCartney, "…came backstage and hugged me and said he loved it."
