IMDB Profile |
Cemetery Junction is a feature film comedy co-written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant. The pair also directed the film and Gervais played a small role as Len Taylor. Shooting began in summer 2009 and the film was released in the UK in April 2010. The film was not released theatrically in the US, except for a brief run at one theater in Glendale, California. It was released on DVD in the US in August 2010.
The film was originally titled The Man from the Pru, a colloquial term (and later an advertising slogan) for agents of the Prudential insurance company. During the writing of the film, the Prudential allowed Ricky and Steve to use their archives for research, however, after reading the finished script, the company decided it was not pleased with how they were to be portrayed in the film and decided not to allow their name to be used. The new title comes from the name of a road junction in the East Reading district of the town of Reading in the English county of Berkshire where the film takes place and which is also home to the Prudential head office. <ref>Financial Times - Pru Blocks Gervais Film Name - 21st April 2009</ref>
Plot
Cemetery Junction is set in the 1970's in Reading, Berkshire, the same town where Gervais himself grew up. It follows a group of four twenty-somethings, one of which works as an insurance salesman. According to Gervais, it is a "coming of age" story that is a cross between The Office and Mad Men.<ref>The Independent 18 August 2008</ref>
