Plot

Andy as Ray Stokes.

Maggie is still working as an extra and she’s currently in a film with Orlando Bloom. She ends up chatting with Orlando about his looks. Maggie doesn’t fancy him and assumes that women are only interested in him because he’s a film star. Her opinion bothers Orlando who even kisses her in a desperate attempt to change her mind. Meanwhile Andy is about to film his new sitcom for the BBC called When The Whistle Blows. His agent, Darren is on the set and tries to convince Andy to give his part to Barry. Andy is then informed that Paul Shane has backed out and will be replaced with Keith Chegwin. In addition, the BBC producers pressure Andy to change the sitcom by adding wigs, glasses, and catchphrases. Andy’s uncomfortable with this and after speaking with Barry about the importance of integrity, he tries to take a stand with Iain and Damon. Iain responds by giving Andy a choice, he can make the sitcom the way they want it or he’ll have to go back to being an extra. Andy chooses the sitcom.

Quotes

  • Orlando Bloom: Ooo, look at me I make art house movies, ooo, I’ve got scissors for hands. Willy Wonka, Johnny Wanker.
  • Darren: And I’ve got the perfect replacement.
    Andy: For what?
Darren: For you, for your character. It’s only Barry.
  • Darren: Well if you’re looking for a podgy fellow who’ll do anything to get on the telly, Barry.
  • Kimberley: Why are you late?
Keith Chegwin: Because my sister buried me today.
Andy: Oh for fuck’s sake! Why would your sister bury you?! That would be mental.
Keith Chegwin: Well, sorry I got so confused. The thing is my sister’s not dead.
  • Orlando Bloom: Oh no look at this, Woman magazine.
Maggie: (reads) “I am having an affair with my brother-in-law’s ghost.”
Orlando Bloom: No. That, “Women’s top 10 fanciest snogs,” number one again.
Maggie: What’s that thing about the ghost?
Orlando Bloom: (reads) “My husband’s brother’s ghost visits me at night and I think I’m falling in love with him.”
    Maggie: Do they have sex?
  • Orlando Bloom: And I tease (Keira Knightley) and I go, “If you wanna kiss somebody, why don’t you kiss Johnny Depp?” She goes, “Don’t make me fucking sick, I’m gonna vomit if you carry on like that.”
Maggie: Why do you keep talking about Johnny Depp?
  • Andy: So basically I’m not going to prostitute myself anymore or my work, okay? I’m just sick of people coming along telling me how they think it should be done, and me just having to bend over and take it up the ass.
Darren: Oh, ah, can I just say no disrespect to either of you as gays. We don’t know if you're givers or receivers, very difficult to tell just from looking at you. Um, although if I was putting money on it I’d probably go with…
Andy: No need to put money on it.

Trivia

  • The scene in the dressing room is a dig at Lenny Henry, whose poster appears on the wall. Ricky Gervais has said on many occasions that Henry annoys him.
  • The ventriloquist, Keith Harris was offered the part that was later played by Keith Chegwin. He turned it down because he thought the part was racist.
